service pack 3 failure

When i try to install service pack 3 for windows XP home edition the
installation fails with the error message "access denied" .Selecting
ok causes SP3 to be uninstalled

Does anyone know what to do about this so that SP3 can be installed

First, make sure that your anti virus software isn't locking the registry and
preventing the installer from modifying the same.
