can you post your dxdiag.txt? I've played all these games without problems
on SP2. Have you tried running the D3D tests in dxdiag?

I ended uninstalling and reinstalling bf1942 and r2r. My only issue now is
trying to get a local game going on our office network.

Just upgraded my system, installed XP Home / SP2, upgraded ALL (and I do mean
all) drivers, and installed Doom3. Having almost identical problem: splash
screen, then "DOOM 3 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience." and it wants to send a report to Microsoft.
Have installed Doom3 three seperate times, with identical results. Can't get
Far Cry to run, either (same problem.) Event viewer shows app error events #
1000 & 1001. Just found this forum; hope it yields results!!

OK there's a new patch out for DOOM 3 which does solve some CtD issues, this
can be downloaded from
http://www.doom3portal.com/files/show.php?category=idReleases

Failing that if you've got 'Fast Writes' enabled you could try disabling it
I've heard a few reports of that solving it. Depending on your graphics
card you should be able to do this in the graphics control panel thingy,
failing that there should be an option in your BIOS.

I am having a similar problem when trying to load Forgotten Hope. This is a

Then it's likely a problem with your Forgotten Hope mod since the game
executable (bf1942.exe) is breaking only when you run the mod. Was the mod
compiled against a specific version of Battlefield 1942? I've seen mods
break when a new patch is released for a game because the mod was build with
the old behavior of the application in mind.

The only other suggestion I can make is going to the mod authors site and
see if there's any information for resolving your problem. You may also
have some luck posting to a Battlefield 1942 forum on a fan site or UseNet.

Now that's the job I want. Getting paid to play FarCry at work.

I am having a similar problem with Final Fantasy XI Online, I play the
PC version on a laptop, I got this message also: "Encountered a problem
and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." also wants to
send a report to microsoft. The funny thing is it worked fine until I
installed IIS about 2 weeks ago for my ASP.NET class, and had to
uninstall .NET Framework and reinstall it again, now cannot play. Just
wanted to know if anyone has any ideas why. But my class is more
important than the game :( sigh, thanks in advance.

I did a Google and MSN Search for this combination of applications and
couldn't turn up a definitive solution. Based on the symptoms you described
it sounds like the application either has a dependency on the .NET framework
(managed DirectX?) or something happened to Final Fantasy itself like a bad
registry entry or patch upgrade.

You might want to uninstall Final Fantasy and run a registry cleaner to
remove any orphaned registry entries for Final Fantasy and then reinstall
the application.

If you are able to confirm that Final Fantasy does use Managed DirectX, it's
possible there is a dependency on the Managed D3DX graphics .dlls which have
been updated in recent developer's SDK kit. If this is the case I can
provide further assistance on where to find a specific release so you can
upgrade/reinstall Managed DirectX on your system.
