According to newspaper article 3 or 4 days ago people
running Windows XP Home Edition will start getting
Service Pack 2 update. As far as I know I have not
received it I do have it set up for automatic updates. I
received a letter in the mail from my computer tech that
states the following: Microsoft has released Service
Pack 2 for windows Xp Home and Professional to
Information Technology Professionals ONLY. It is not
available for download to single computers yet. It goes
on to state in this way: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL IT
YOURSELF! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Can anyone tell me which
is correct - newspaper article correct or is my computer
tech just trying to get the $39.00 dollars to do the
upgrade? Thank you

First of all, I wouldn't pay anyone $39 to install a service pack on my
machine. To answer your question, yes, your tech is right about the first
part. The update that is currently out is for IT Proffesionals only. However,
Microsoft has released Service Pack 2 for home users, but only through
automatic updates. You may not get it right away because Microsoft is
releasing the Service Pack in phases in order to prevent overloading their
servers.

Information about most KB searches are usually vague, if
you really want to understand a security patches actual
issue, get a shovel! After following several links, you
may find out. For example, I recently (i'm assuming that
there have been thousands of you tried same search) queried
KB [s/b dumb db] for the XP Pro Sp2 release date. Not to
get it yet, but to schedule myself time to review the
service packs fixes, paying attention to the compabitibilty
issues primarily. We're using legacy apps., intranet
clients w/ internet access are few enough to enable auto
updates, for our db on server. Short story long, I never
was able to find this info on
Microsoft.com/windows/xp/pro/sp2--Tree or within links
where any logical person would have posted this info. OR,
is that the problem itself, LOGIC?? I danderously 'assume'
that the shady game is a result of a lack in confidence on
behlf of MS. As you likely know, this XPsp2 release was
constantly pushed back. Again, lacking confidence seems
aparent. My opinion of the XPsp2 fixes, "this should be
called XP Pro sp0 (initial release of OS)!
