Service Pack 2 problem

After successfully downloading all 266 MB of Service Pack 2, I tried to
run/install it in my Windows XP. (I need Service Pack 2, apparently, in
order to run Office Home and Student 2007.) When I try to rune the Service
Pack 2 exe file I get the following error message: "The expected version of
the product was not found on your system."

I probably should also mention that I've been through one of the levels of
Computer Hades of late -- and had to resort to the Restore function. I lost
a lot of software and am now trying to download a new Office program.

Thanks for any help!

What is your Windows XP CD? How is it described on the face of the CD?

Thanks for your reply, Gerry. I don't believe I've ever had a Windows XP CD.
XP came bundled with my computer when I bought it and I don't recall also
getting a CD.

Gerry: hp pavilion a630n. (My computer used to run Microsoft Home and
Office 2003, so I'm unsure how it may fit into the puzzle of not running SP2.)

Gerry:

This morning I tried once again to install SP2 from the already downloaded
file. The Wizard started working. But now it has been seemingly stuck on
"Inspecting your current configuration for more than 90 minutes. Moreover,
the "grogress indicator bar" shows no darkened horizontal column progress at
all.

Is this normal?

Thanks.

You apparently downloaded the wrong file, and are trying to apply an
*Office* Service Pack, not a Windows one. You get that message when
you don't have the appropriate version of Office installed.

Do NOT download and save SP2. (Key word save). Download and let it install.
If your product
is registered it will install.
