Help! I have a really annoying problem that I believe was caused by the
installation of Windows Service Pack 2 for XP Home. Everytime I turn on my
computer and login, the first time I try and start an MP3 explorer.exe
crashes
and takes a few seconds to come back on, during which time it closes down
several programmes I use. It seems to be a pretty common error i searched it
on googles and many results were found, however i could not find one which
actually told me how to fix it.

Please help!

I am running Windows XP Home Edition with an Athlon 2400XP+ , 512mb of RAM
if that is relevant.

and, Sorry this is a repost from yesterday, no one helped me on the other
thread and its way down the order now =(

You probably did not get a response for you did not clarify yourself on which
explorer you are having the problem. There is Windows Explorer and Internet
Explorer. The following are your two choices:
IE (Internet Explorer), also an icon on your Desktop.
Next: Start>All Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer.
Restate your question to which one, someone out here will be glad to assist
you.

i am having somewhat of the same thing w/ windows explorer.exe. whenever i
use it, open 'my computer' or access anything local, explorer.exe crashes,
and XP sends out an error report to MS, & what is done w/ it the Deity only
knows. i also installed SP2, although this was weeks ago, & this just
started. is there a 'repair' function w/ XP?thanks...mike

I am replying about the very first comment. The most probable reason i
that nobody knows the answer, and that's why you never got a reply.
unfortunately also don't know the answer. You did not word your proble
incorrectly, and it's kind of rude to say that you should have specifie
which explorer you were having problems with. Anybody with half a brai
would have got a clue when you stated "explorer.exe" I think peopl
should read all the words and not just what they wish to read. I'
sorry I can't be of any help, and even worse all I am doing is hackin

It crashes when I open search or my documents or etc. etc, has anyone come up
with a solution. After SP@ also

It looks like the DEP module in SVC PK2 is your problem. And there is no
answer for that and for me except to do a complete system restore and stay
with service pack 1 until they get the 2 fixed.

In your boot.ini file is a line that will look similar to this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

The last part is relevant to DEP. Available switches include:
/NoExecute=OptIn (enables DEP for Windows system files)
/NoExecute=OptOut (enables systemwide DEP)
/NoExecute=AlwaysOn (enables systemwide DEP without possibility of
individual application exclusion)
/NoExecute=AlwaysOff (disables DEP completely)

so juan, are you saying it is safe to run your computer without SP2???!

I have clean install of XP Home and SP2 several months, but now all of a sudden having some major problems. . . blue screens, etc.!

It will be alright to dump SP2 and only run 1? Any ramifications of that??

Well, I really don't like the "blue" screens either!

Is MS reworking SP2 for all these known problems written here in this forum??

Thanks,
christy ;-)

I am running Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003 I am having a
similar problem, having downloaded the service pack I now find that when I
right click on a file I get the message "Windows explorer has encountered a
problem and needs to close" being bit of an old fart - does Windows explorer
run out of Office or Windows - I suppose obviously windows, if so will a
re-installation help.

I think that the compatability somehow with older computers,. And of related
to the software code in internet explorer? But why would service pack 1 and 2
work just fine with one computer and not with another that might be older?
The many issues of non compatable older driver's in the bio's makes some
sense and other related software , such as related to crashing while on the
internet and having to reformat to the original winXP OS. But perhaps there
is another issue altogether and the incompatability issue is just a symptem
of something else. Perhaps the issue is just make the purchess of a newer
computer. Or just use the older PC and winXP that works on it. Sometime's it
is a good thing to spend some money and retire a old computer that has well
outlasted it's expected serviceability and useage. But for those that enjoy
their old computer, this can be a issue.
If it works , don't not fix it. Just download all available security patch's
and available updates for the many prg's that are available.Until the PC is
too old. Enjoy.
I have alway's enjoyed all of Microsofts pruduct's. The newest OS , is awsome.

I am having almost the same problem as "movermike' but my issue is when
opening a file (or even opening the folder) Not using explorer much I use
the old system of clicking the my computer icon >c:/ > .. When getting to
the folder that has the video I want to watch The folder will open for a
moment, then explorer crashes, and kills off most of my icons in my systray.
After deleting all items in that folder it is fine. This has happened in
more than one folder, and I have ran and reran Mcafee/adware checkers/spybot
with no hits.

Any idea?

Sharon,

My line ends with -- optin /fastdetect, and I have been crashing almost
every time I use Windows Explorer.

Should I change "fastdetect" to one of your choices?
