Listen to Dell. SP1 is a mixed bag in that I have read of some terrible
problems. I have a Dell 8200 & do not use it because of the horror stories
posted on this site. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of SP1 can shed
some light.

Jerry --

Your new Dell likely has SP1 already installed. To verify,
go to Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter. You
should see a notation for Service Pack 1.

Sandy,

Not all brands have compatibility issues with SP1. Please post the error
message you received, while updating to SP1. The critical updates should not
be ignored.

Ramesh,

I have a Samsung laptop with OEM bundled XP which, when I installed SP1
stopped allowing me to use or create custom shortcuts to applications.
Going by what you say I should uninstall it again. OK, but what about all
the other security updates on the Windows Update site? Should I ignore them
or download them?

I am just loking for a quiet life, I don't want to download a load of
trouble but I don't want to leave myself open to attack either.

I would value your, or anyone else who has experience of XP's opinion.

Regards

Sandy

Ramesh,

Just an addition, I have now downloaded all the updates on the Windows XP
site except some Windows XP updates for video & Media players that I will
never ever use.

The problem with the shortcuts however stll carries on.

Regards,

Sandy

Thank you very much Ramesh. It will take me some time to learn about
backing up the registry etc. before I attempt to apply the fix. I cannot
tell you how grateful I am for the help that you have given me; I really
appreciate it.

The learning curve starts here

Sandy
