hours to download the up dated vision of windows xp
service pack 1. Iwas told by a gentleman from gateway
that is (my machine) it might take that long but i don't
seem to think it should is he right he also told me i
could shut it down then come back to it and it when start
up again. well after downloading it for 5 hours the first
time (before i shut it down)now i tried to restart it and
i have to start all over again because it said it was not
downloaded at all it didn't even show it had started.
please help me.

No, the service pack downloads will not autorestart, of if they do, there may be a limited time frame. The full download is about 128 megabytes in size. If you're on dial up this can take a long time to download. 7 to 8 hours would not be unusual on a dial up connection.

You can purchase XP SP1a on a CD from MS, I don't have the link. Do a Google
search for it.

Alternately, if you have a friend with a broad-band connection, get them to
download the network install edition for you. While they're at it, have them
download the "rollup" and WMP for you and burn them to a CD. This will take
care of all the time consuming downloads. The rest, you should be able to
get with no problem.

When you have the CD opened in your machine, double click the SP1a .exe
first, that will install it for you. Then do the same with the rollup and
finally, do it with the WMP file. After you have finished with that, go to
the Help and Support page and scan for up-dates.

All the downloading may seem like a lot to ask of a friend but, with a good
connection, it only takes 15-20 minutes.

LOL, JAX
