XP Pro SP2

Have installed iTunes. When installing, gets to where it needs to start the
iPodServices.exe, but it always fails. This is not an Apple thing, cause the
exact same program installs perfectly on my laptop with same OS. On Install,
get a message "Cannot start service." (iPod). Have tried to manually start
it, but only runs for maybe a minute, then get the windows error message,
"iPodServices.exe encountered a problem and needs to shut down...." ..."do
you wish to send to MS???"
Have tried completely uninstalling, reinstalling, log in as Administrator,
etc. No luck.
Any ideas???
P.S. The iPodservices.exe is not even listed in Services.

Have been all thru apple community troubleshooting and even posted on their
usergroups site. No reply yet because I believe this is a Microsoft problem.

Try this:

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Under the General tab, check "Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services",
click "apply" and reboot.

Since millions of Windows users successfully install and use iTunes (I have
4 boxen here alone that run iTunes), there is something specific about your
particular computer that is causing the problem. Assuming that it is "a
Microsoft" problem is a false assumption. It could be some program,
process, or driver you have installed on that box that doesn't play nicely
with iTunes. Maybe you have a security program that doesn't allow the
software to install properly. Maybe the box isn't virus/malware-free and
that is causing the issue. We can't know since we can't see your computer.

First, look in Event Viewer and see if there are any clues to help you
narrow down the troubleshooting. Then completely uninstall iTunes per
whatever Apple's instructions are. Then do a clean boot and see if you can
install iTunes then. You might even want to try installing in Safe Mode if
it will.

Here are various notes I've gathered about difficulties with installing
iTunes. Maybe some of them will help. Caveat: since I haven't had any
problems installing iTunes on my machines or on any of the 170 school
laptops or on numerous clients' machines, I haven't tried any of these
fixes. YMMV.

http://retrovirus.com/incr/2005/11/quicktime-problem:
If you’re trying to install iTunes on Windows and it dies during the
Quicktime installation with a “-3"error, or you try to install Quicktime
7.0.3 on Windows and you get an Error 1714 or some complaint about not
being able to find quicktime.msi even though it’s there, the way to fix it
is to:

Open regedit
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT –> Installer and select Products
Use the Find menu to find quicktime inside that part of the key. Delete the
part of the tree that you find. You should now be able to install Quicktime
and iTunes without incident.

iTunes for Windows installation quits with 1607 error or while publishing
product information - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300361
Error 1406 or 1402 appears when you install iTunes or QuickTime for Windows

Hope you get it worked out.

I really do appreciate ALL the help given here. It's just very frustrating.
Glad you brought up the safe mode. I tried that, but get an error
"1607 - unable to install InstallShield scripting runtime."
In the event viewer, see nothing concerning unable to start ipod service,
but did see several about not being able to start DCOM in safe mode. So
assume a needed service is not able to load in safe mode to let the install
complete.

Not every program will let you install in Safe Mode; I just thought it might
be worth a shot. However, since you get the 1607 error, see this:

"Clean boot in Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Did the clean boot thing. Narrowed it down to the Load System Services.
Now to figure out which of those is the culprit. Question: In msconfig and
the services tab, what is the purpose of the serviec being checked? Doesn't
seem to make a difference as to whether or not the service does any thing
different. What's the best way of narrowing the list down, checking one at a
time?
Thanks again for your help. I no longer get the "can't start service"
message. iTunes just starts and then I get a message that says it needs to
be installed again in order to work with the iPod.

Do not disable services from msconfig. There is no safety net and it is
completely possible to hose your computer by disabling a crucial service.
Instead, do Start>Run>services.msc [enter]

Here are sites where you can look up what you find:

http://aumha.org/a/loads.htm - What loads at Startup?
http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/

Since you are getting the message to uninstall/reinstall iTunes, have you
tried that (before messing with the services)? If not, I would.

I would also uninstall the iPod entirely and just get iTunes installed
first. Then address the iPod install separately.
