We suddenly have been having the following pop up
"windows cannot find c:\WINDOWS\services.exe and could
not load c:\WINDOWS\services.exe specified in the
registry. This has caused the computer to basically quit
working. We cannot connect to the internet, and a few of
the other programs are not working. How can I fix this?

Check the system for spyware and virus. Windows does have a file by this
name but not in that location. Windows file is in Windows\System32 folder.
The error message is giving a path to the Windows folder and should be
scrutinized closely. It's not unusual for various malware to try to trick
the user in this manner: valid filename but in the wrong location.

If you recently cleaned a virus or spyware item, the cleanup was
incomplete. The malware is looking for it's missing file. You don't want to
give it that file. You want to clean up the rest of the mess so that the
startup message goes away.

Get the name of the virus/malware (from memory or from logs maintained by
your cleanup programs). Look up those names on the websites of the products
that identified them. Example: Norton says it found xyz-something. Look
that up at the Norton website. You should find directions for the steps
needed to complete the removal manually.
