I have a single 2003 Domain with two domain controllers. When i switch
off the one holding the global catalog rol, users still can log to the
domain, but a service that runs with a domain account cant start
anymore. The error message i get is "The service cant start: username
unknown or wrong password" or something like that. If i switch on
again the GC server it works perfectly again.Does anyone know why this
could be ?

For some cases the GC is needed. Just make all DCs into GCs (for
single domain, or small, forests.)

Also make sure you always have multiple DNS servers. Preferably
AD Integrated on the two DCs.
