Hello everyone! I recently installed a Windows 2000 server and everything appears to be working fine on the server, when I tried to attach an XP client with the Network Identification Wizard, everything went smoothly until the step where I added users. When I tried to add a user, an error-message along the lines of "The user could not be created because the trust realation between this computer and the primary domain failed." So, I just contuned setting up Windows as stand-alone workstation. After set-up was complete, I logged on as the local administrator and attempted to add the computer to the domain. This time everything seemed to work, and I could even log on with domain accounts. However, when I attempt to add share/file permissions to files and folders, the domain is not available as a "location" to look for user accounts. Also, I cannot access domain group policy from mmc.
After browsing the online help, I found one article suggesting that I readd the computer to the domain, which I did. However, the same problems still occur. All other articles tell me to "contact the network administrator," which doesn't help me one bit. I'm pretty positive that this is a problem with the server, as I even reinstalled windows on the client computer and the same results were again present. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks for taking your time to read this long post!

you will only be able to access the Domain Group policy from the Domain
Users and Computers mmc Snap-in, or the Group Policy Management console.

you can get the console from :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/gpmc/default.mspx
but pay attention to:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326469
You Must Install a Hotfix to Install GPMC on Windows XP Professional

as for your
However, when I attempt to add share/file permissions to files and folders,
the domain is not available as a "location" to look for >user accounts.

can you explain what exactly is listed in the location to look for if you
hit the browse button?

Yes, I know, but the snap-in does not recognize the domain, either. I receive the error, "The program cannot open the required dialog box because no locations can be found. Close this message, and try again.

All that appears is the name of my local computer, CC78449-B. I should be able to select the domain and add users from the AD.

You are correct. This sounds like a DNS misconfiguration issue (or possibly
a time issue).

First can you ensure your clients time is not more than 5 min off of the
server time. Second can you run a reskit tool on the client called
nltest.exe the syntax would be "nltest.exe /dsgetdc:" reply with the output

nltest.exe results
DsGetDcName failed: Status = 1355 0x54b ERROR_NO_SUCH_DOMAI

ouch! Also, I checked the times, and they're only a minute apart, but from the results of that program, I don't think that's the problem. =-(
