Server won't start (reindexing indicies)

My server fails to start. When it boots up it displays a message that it's
reindexing indicies. I reboot into active directory restore mode and
execute an ntdsutil Authoritative restore and restore database. It just
sits at opening database for over 30 minutes. What can I do? I have
another server with AD on it and I made it the global catalog server for
right now, but I need to get this other server back up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you boot into AD, or it just sits there reindexing indices ? Have you
tried to do a database file check in files menu of ntdsutil ? Have you
checked your EventLog for possible problem with disk subsystem ?

I tried the database file check and let it go for 2 hours... nothing. I
went to try a repair install, but it locked up as well. After that, I was
no longer to even get into directory services restore mode. :-( That's
what I get for being impatient. I am now installing a fresh copy on the
server and we'll see what I can do from there...
