Question is:
When does a small office with 4-5 networked machines running some flavor of
Windows need a "server" machine as opposed to just another pc running Xp Pro
acting as the server for the other machines?

They are just file sharing and off-loading data file from their PC's to the
server machine. Seems to me that any PC on the network can fill that
function. Yes/No?

When I say server I mean maybe a Unix server or Windows 2000 Server etc.

Advantages/disadvantages?

Thanks,
Alex

Yes it can, but with a domain controller server you can manage accounts once
instead of 4-5 times. You can manage policy once, you can do many things once,
instead of 4 or 5 times.

Hi,
Small office with 4-5 machines needs a server when thy require a
centralised environment
i.e. if we want to have a user which can login to any machine with
centralised security
Your XP pro machine can not provide centralised security or load balancing
The kind of job ypu guys have in the network doesn't require a server
since its just file sharing

unix/Windows 2000 server

Disadvantages: In a small network with no specific job to do only file
sharing and maintenance
having a server will be costly

advantages:

If you require security, centralised management of the network
Distributed File system
and several other things then having a one server can do it so many things

If you any other question do reply me
