Server Timeout during non-server authoring

Hi -
I've created a 20M web (no subwebs) on my HDD in preparation for deployment
with a piece of commercial software.

Since yesterday I've not been able to open the web for final editing. I get
a "The server"" timed out. The current request did not complete
successfully." error.

Obviously, I'm confused because I'm not working on a server at all, just on
the computer hard drive. Other errors I've seen along the way tell me that
I'm having trouble with accessing Sharepoint services, which again I'm not
working with and haven't set the web up to use.

The web is strictly HTML,images, a few .swf files, and a couple of
javascripts. Nothing fantastic. But my inability to edit it is jeopardizing
the delivery of the product (a online user's guide for a piece of software).

Please help - is there a solution (or a cause) for this?

Thanks,
Pam

Search for and delete *.web files, the FP temp directory, and if you have done so in a while, defrag
your HD.

Thank you, but deleting the .web and temp directories didn't resolve the
issue. Defrag will have to wait until non-work hours. Does anyone know what
causes this? I've tried opening the web on multiple machines with the same
results.

I can't seem to find any mention anywhere about this type of an issue, when
it's not related to actually publishing a site to a server.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Pam

How are you trying to access this web from other machines??

Also, although the web is on your hard drive, is it an IIS based web, and if so is the IIS admin
service started, and is the default web started in IIS

Actually, I've been carrying this web around on a CF card so I could work on
it at home over the weekend. So, in essence, it's been treated as a file
directory that I've copied from hard drive to card (and back again). At any
given time, only the local machine has had to access the drive where the web
is located. Never from a remote machine to the web.

I'm fairly certain it's not machine specific issues, since I tried to open
the file/web on both my machines at home. All three are running FP 2003.

I've been working on this web for 10 months and never had this problem until
yesterday. So no environment variables have changed for it. In fact, I was
editing with it fine until one FILE>SAVE operation when the errors began
yesterday.

IIS is on the machine and running, although I've never checked my home
computers for their status.

I take it this is not a "normal" error condition you guys see a lot of?

Cheers,
Pam

Ah OK. Then it's not an IIS issue.

Can you browse the web on the CF Card with Windows Explorer??

Yes, the files browse just fine in Explorer. I can open individual pages
with a FILE>OPEN command, just get the errors when I do a OPEN SITE command.

Cheers,
Pam

Just to further complicate issues, when I tried to open a single page within
the web for editing/viewing, I get this error:

"An error occurred accessing your Sharepoint Services site files. Authors -
if authoring against a web server, please contact the webmaster. Webmasters
- see the server's application log for more details."

Obviously, I'm not authoring against a server, let alone one with Sharepoint
on it. I've come to a complete standstill on this project.

Cheers,
Pam

1. FP uses the same error message for both FP extensions and SharePoint Services.

2. How are you copying and what location on your HD are you working on the site before you copy it
to the CF disk?

Close FrontPage.
Copy and paste the following into the IE address bar or Start > Run and click Go or OK as
appropriate.

%UserProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache

Delete any and all .web files found at the location.

Reopen FrontPage and then try opening the web.

I'm using Windows Explorer to copy the web from the My Documents/My Webs
folder to root of the CF card.

Pam

Steve:
Cache has been cleared of all .web files but it won't open.

FP does open OTHER webs. This is the only one I have of this size, though.

Cheers,
Pam

Suggest you use the File Menu | Publish Command in the future, and avoid using Windows Explorer.

Sensible suggestion...never thought of using the Publish command to move from
disk to disk. See how much of a rut we get into?

Still not sure why nothing will open, though.

Cheers,
Pam

Not being familiar with CF Cards, is there a possibility that a file has been set to read only or
otherwise "protected."

Good thought, but I already checked that.

The attributes for this web and it's files are the same as other webs that
the software can open just fine.

I'm striking out here, aren't I?

If you were to recommend recreating the web and moving the files to a new
web, what would be the best procedure?

Just to see if that would create something usable?

Ok, another question first.

When you "browse" the CF card with Windows Explorer, does the root folder for the web have the Blue
Globe on it??

If not, try this it might help,
Open Notepad and copy and paste the following into it:

[.ShellClassInfo]
IconFile=_vti_pvt/fpdbw.ico
IconIndex=0
ConfirmFileOp=0
InfoTip=Stores your local web site

and then save it with the name desktop.ini Then browse to the root folder for the web on the CF
card
and place the desktop.ini file into it.

If it already has one, make sure it matches the above, especially the ConfirmFileOp setting. ( open
it in notepad )

As for recreating, If you have a copy on your home machine, I would simply "publish" to the CF
card.

Hope this helps

Also try this. Browse the CF Card using Internet Explorer.
Open the home page in IE and then in IE click File > "Edit with FrontPage" and see if it opens.

Steve,
You've done a wonderful job of trying to help and I do appreciate it.
Except that...yes, the webs have the blue globe icon and the desktop.ini
files in them just as you showed.

Interesting side note, I regressed back to a version of the web I had saved
to a network drive last week. It opened just fine. I will be recreating the
changes I made over the weekend and watching to see if the timeout error
occurs on it at a certain file size.

Thanks a lot, though.

Cheers,
Pam

Ok. Good luck.

iirc There is a file size issue with FP 2000 and individual files over 1mb in size, but there are no
issues I know of as to the "aggregate" size of a web site.
