I have an aging windows 2000 domain controller that I am
going to replace. What is the best practice for doing
this. I plan on running dcpromo and making it a member
server, renameing the old server and change the IP. Then I
will install my new server set it's IP address to the same
as the old one used to be and naming it the same name as
the old server. The part I am not clear on is how to
remove the old servers name from AD to I can name the new
server the same. Any Idea's?

Here is some Tips, If the existing server has IIS installed, Remove the
IUSR_<SERVERNAME> and IWAM_<SERVERNAME> account from Active Directory.

After you successfully have demoted the existing DC with DCPROMO to an
member server, delete al related objects in Sites and Services snapin.

Rename or remove it

Clear up your DNS for records to this server.

RJ,

I will have to ask you: is this aging WIN2000 DC the only DC in your
environment? Based on your plan I sure hope not. I hope that you have at
least one other DC in your environment. If you have only one DC in your
environment and you follow your plan you will not have a domain anymore!

RJ,

Here's my (belated) recommendation:

0) Backup, Backup, Backup :-)
1) Demote your DC
2) Take the (now member) server offline (disconnect from
the network)
3) Reset the computer account for the server you demoted
and took offline. AD Users & Computers -> right-click
computer account -> reset account.
4) Join new server to domain using same name as old
server...this will automatically re-enable the account you
reset in the last step.
5) Install stuff :-)
6) Promote new server to DC
7) Rename the (still offline) server that you took offline
in step 2.
8) Join the renamed server to the domain.

I hope this helps you in your process.
