Hi,
Two of the computers in our lab are running Windows XP,
and have been exhibiting strange behavior lately. Here
are the symptoms:
1. Other computers on the network cannot connect to
Windows Shared folders on the afflicted computers. They
are instead presented with the help-less message: "Windows
cannot find '\\<NAME>'. Check the spelling and try
again..." The same thing happens if the IP address is
specified rather than the domain name.
2. Folders on the afflicted computers cannot be shared.
After right clicking on a folder, choosing "Properties"
and the "Sharing" tab, and then clicking on the "Share
this folder on the network" check box, the user is
presented with the following message: "An error occurred
while trying to share <FOLDER>. The Server service is not
started."
Indeed, if I go to the Services control panel,
the "Server" service is not started. When I try to start
it, the status cycles from "Starting..." to "Started"
to "Stopped" almost immediately. It doesn't give any
errors at all, but it will not stay "started".
Any help would be much appreciated.
