I'm having trouble getting the "Server" service on a
Windows 2000 server machine to start. When I try to
start it manually, I get the following message:
"Could not start the Server service on Local Computer.
The service did not return an error. this could be an
internal Windows error or an internal service error.
If the problem persists, contact your system
administrator."

Not sure if this is related, but I get repeated error
messages about ntvdm.exe when I log off this machine.

Thanks for your help!

Have a look at article 156687 Entries in Config.nt or Autoexec.nt may cause
NTVDM errors.
