I have a similar problem. I am using MS Outlook 97 (8.02.4212) - I think this is SR-1 (my other Office 97 applications state they are SR-1), which I understands incorporates the IMEP.
Emails I "send" are filed in the Sent Mail box, but I receive an "undeliverable" email in my Inbox that states "No transport provider was available for delivery to this recipient."
Would downloading SR-2 solve the problem? Or will I have to upgrade? Can I upgrade just Outlook or do I have to upgrade all the Office suite? What do I upgrade to?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Upgrade or use Outlook Express. (From memory, the Internet Mail Enhancement
Patch was designed/written before the guidelines of smtp authentication.)

Due to the Swen virus, all e-mails sent to this account will be deleted
w/out reading.

My PC recently crashed and I had to switch to another that has Outlook 97
installed. My ISP tells me I can only receive email with this version of
Outlook because there is no "My server requires authentication" option in
Outlook 97. Is there a work-around for this problem other than buying a
newer version of Outlook?
