I've got a Windows 2000 server that keeps restarting for
no apparent reason. The event viewer just tells me that
the restart was unexpected. The machine is a DC and is
also my DNS and DHCP server. Could somebody be doing
this to me remotely ? Any suggestions on how to prevent
this from happening would be appreciated.

If the server is fully patched, you have to look at the hardware. Is there
an UPS attached, which might cause problems? Memory, motherboard on the
server might go flaky.

I agree with Marina in that if Event Viewer is not showing any other errors
it is probably hardware related if patches are up to date and viruses are
ruled out. Overheating CPU and bad/flaky/underpowered power supply are also
prime suspects. And yes, someone could be do it remotely but they would need
domaim administrator priviliges. You could enable auditing of logon events
and see if there was any administrator access at about the same time. ---
