Server keeps disappearing from network

Please help.
I work for a school and we have nearly 1500 users, 300+
PC's (Desktops and laptops) and 2 servers, the older of
the 2 servers now keeps losing it's connection to the
network when it is being heavily used. Because we are a
school we have the disadvantage that at the start of a
lesson 150 users all want to logon which the server copes
with but come the end of the lesson when they all want to
save their work the server doesn't like it and it's shares
to the users work areas all vanish from view and the
server goes offline. I can fix this by stopping and
starting the server service and it's dependencies but
obviously this is not a solution. Could it be the server
that we possibly need to replace? Any ideas would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Have you checked the event logs on the server to see if they contain any
hints as to what's happening?

I did think of that but the event logs are all blank so
another interesting problem.

Hmmm ... okay, you stumped me. But the logs are completely blank? Not even
normal housekeeping entries in them? That is very odd and I'd be looking
long and hard at the log retention settings on the server.

You might want to replace the network card on the servers with something
like an Intel Gigabyte adapter.
