Can someone please tell me what I turned on to cause my
win 2k server to ping every possible ip address and to
keep doing so. This is a new server install and I can
not figure out what service is causing this, I stopped
all internet related services but it is still doing
this. It is bogging down my server, my firewall and my
gateway.

Any help would be apreciated.

Thanks,
Al

Have you patched your server with the lastest critical updates and run a
anti-virus program with current signatures on your Server.

You can become infected with the MSBLAST/Welchia virus during the
installation of Server.

Problem solved. It was not a virus. It happns that the
WINS Client service was installed and set to atart
automatically thus causing the server to ping every IP
address beginning with the very first IP address on my
subnet attempting to get machine names for every possible
address. Once I stopped the service the behavior stopped.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I had a problem similar to your's. Found I had the
welchia virus on the system. Check out www.symantec.com
for a virus check.
