I am having a problem with my D-Link DSL-504G Router. I´ve bee
through the manual and looked at the advice pages on DLink websit
(Router is no longer supported), and think I have everything se
properly, but can´t seem to get it right. I think it may be a LA
setting, but I am out of my depth. Please can someone help?

I have two computers both running Windows 2000 Pro SP4. They ar
connected by Cat 5 LAN cable from a LAN port on the ECS motherboards t
the DSL-504G router.

Both computers can see the router and both access the internet throug
it, without any difficulty.

The problem I have is that the two computers are not able to see eac
other,

Computer one is called "server", its not a server, just the name I gav
it in windows, computer two is called "slave". Both are set up exactl
the same, same workgroup names etc. When I use the "My Network Places
button on the ´server´desktop, after one or two minutes of searching,
get a box up that says:
Workgroup is not accessible. Network path cannot be found.

When I do the same on the ´slave´, I get the icons on the screen fo
both ´server´and ´slave´, but when I click on the ´server´icon t
access it, then the box comes up saying:
\\server is not accessible. Network path cannot be found.

Both computers can access the routers windows based configuratio
pages. The router used the 192.168.2.1 address that it came with an
the IP address of the two machines are dynamic.

I´ve tried all the usual Windows things of trying to get [Network an
dialup connections][Make New connection] and thw wizard to locate th
LAN, but it can´t.

Any advice you could give would be welcomed.

Thank you

Norman

Verify that both computers are getting correct network IP addresses by running
Ipconfig /all on both of them. The both should show the a network address in the
192.168.2.xxx range where .xxx would be the host address which would be different for
each computer. They each need to use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

Other things to check.

-- Personal firewalls, tcp/ip filtering, or internet protection software can
interfere with connectivity between computers. Try to ping each other by their name
and IP address. Booting into safemode with networking is worth a try to see if a
startup application/service is interfering.

-- File and print sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks needs to be installed and
enabled for tcp/ip. The workstation and server services need to be running and
netbios over tcp/ip need to be enable which it would be by default. Ipconfig /all
would tell if tcp/ip over netbios is disabled. Services.msc in the run box can be
used to find services information. Nbtstat -n should show al least three names
registered on each computer.

-- Look in Event Viewer for errors or warnings on each computer that may provide a
clue.

-- Try to connect to the other computer by entering \\computername\sharename in the
run box of the computer you want to connect from. If that does not help try using the
IP address of the other computer as in \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\sharename.

-- Sometimes a reboot will help a computer with a stalled service.

-- The problem would not be with the router, it would be in your computer
configurations. --- Steve

Steve,

Thanks for the advice. I got some other advice to install NetBEUI on
both machines, which I did, and it partially

solved the problem. I´ve not changed any other settings.

Componants installed are:

Client for MS Network
File and Printer Sharing
NetBEUI Protocol
TCP/IP

The "slave" can see, access and write to the shared "Server" folders,
but the "Server" still cannot see "Slave" and

gives the Network path not found message.

Rebooting and booting into safe mode with network support don´t make
any difference.

IPconfig /all gives the following results:

When you run services.msc you want to look at the status of the server service and it
should be started. I personally don't recommend installing netbeui as that will
complicated things more than fix it in my opinion if there already is a problem.
Normally for nbtstat -n you will see two entries for the computer and one for the
workgroup and maybe one for master browser. The computer should show <00> and <20>
for networking to work properly. I see you also have a wins server configured?? You
may want to disable that in your router as you computer is acting as a hybrid node
which will cause it to try to use a wins server first to resolve netbios names which
require a Windows Server operating system normally. It also looks like you have two
network adapters on that computer as shown by two mac addresses and two IP addresses.
Unless you have some need for two I would disable one of them in networking
connections. What I meant by \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\sharename is to put the lan IP address
of the target computer you want to connect to in the run box of the client computer
as in \\192.168.2.7\sharename where sharename is the name of a share on the target
computer. If that works it means you have a name resolution problem instead of a
general connectivity problem. --- Steve
