server error

whenever I try to apply to annything on the net when using
internet explorer(6.0) such as online job application
forms, Hotmail etc. I am informed that the server cannot
be found. However, when I open the application form in a
new window and look at the adress, it always reads
https:// not http:// If I remove the "s" it works. why is
this, and how can I fix it?
 
Some program (usually spyware\parasite) may have overridden the URL prefix
setting?
