Server error?

I am getting what seems to be a Server error message trying to access the
root of drive G: that I have been successfgully acessing with FrontPage 2002
(Win 98 ) for a long time.

I am NOT USING A SERVER. Drive G is the design and authoring site for my
large werb site with its many subwebs. The wording "Server error" is
possibly a clue.

I have rebooted with no effect.

I have uninstalled FP 2002 and reinstalled with no effect.

I have applied all the service packs to Office XP with no effect other than
the error I have started immediately AFTER applying the first service pack.

I have uninstalled Frontpage and used Regvac to clean the Registry with no
effect.

I have uninstalled and removed all FrontPage sections from the Registry with
no effect.

I have searched the Registry for referrences to "/G" and find none.

I have searched the Registry for references to server stuff and cannot find
anything that would seem to be relevant.

What could be confusing FrontPage 2002 to get confused and give me the error
message [Server error: T0here is no web at "/G"] ?

You might want to try the Windows Newsgroup.

IS there a way to BACK OFF THE SERVICE PACKS?

If they were the cause of not being able to utilize a device root, then I
want to restore my system to the conditiojn it was in PRIOR to applying the
service packs.

At least at that point, I did know ho to circumvent the problems I was
having. Now I am in deeper doo.

Had I known that I would loose access to the root of drive G within
FrontPage, I would have NEVER applied the service pack.

IS there a way to BACK OFF THE SERVICE PACKS without reinstalling Windows
98?

If the SP are listed under Add/Remove then you should be able to un-install
them, otherwise un-installing FP or Office and then re-install and don't
apply the SP.

Can I ask why you are not running the Personal Web Server under Windows 98,
which would allow you to do the same thing as you were able to do with G
drive and keep your Office/FP updated?

Yes you may ask.

I looked at the option of installing a personal web server several years ago
and felt it was too technically demanding for me to feel secure in
installing and keeping maintained. I am a "white-knuckles" person on
technical matters. Anything very technical freaks me out. I freeze up and
cant think straight.

I thought about having a professional install a personal webserver for me
and keep it going. But I live in a small community, so talents in this area
are not numerous, and this is a community project for which I do not get any
personal payment, so funds are limited. There is revenue enough for me to
afford the equipment, software, internet connection, and supplies that I
would otherwise not be able to afford.

It appeared to me that using my regular hard drive to author within
FrontPage was working quite well and the only reason to install a personal
web server was if one wanted to design and test more than just HTML, such as
ASP, Data base stuff, PHP, etc.

Once I realized that I could make a whole drive letter a FrontPage web so
that I could emulate a server based navigation system on my hard drive that
implemented links with a root based absolute reference that I learned about
fiorst in MS DOS (Example: /Shopping/shop.htm to find the shop.htm document
no matter what directory the HTML document was fetched from, or /index.htm
to fetch the home page no matter what directory the HTML document was
fetched from) and could be used in any subdirectory, I made drive G:/ my
web. It has worked fine.

The navigation system I used is a JavaScript program ( XFX DHTML MENU
BUILDER) that I am able to test and debug on my local hard disk with drive
G: being the root of my web.

This process has been simple, and reliable. It requires NO technical skills
other that just FrontPage skills.

Until now.

The failure of the FP 2002 web component insert content page led me to
install the service packs for Office XP. I am sure you were trying to help
me when you suggested that I do this and helped me understand that the
process of installing a service pack is a simple process. Thank you for that
help.

However, something happened. It seems specific to FrontPage, since no other
application is preventing me from accessing the root of any of my drives,

I must correct something I said in one of my other posts. FrontPage does
NOT keep me out of all the drive roots, just certain ones where there was
previously a FrontPage web;
D: FrontPage lets me open the root
E: FrontPage lets me open the root
F: FrontPage lets me open the root
G: FrontPage Does NOT let me open the root [ Server error: There is no
web named "/G"]
H: FrontPage Does NOT let me open the root [ Server error: There is no
web named "/H"]
I: FrontPage Does NOT let me open the root [ Server error: There is no
web named "/I"]

Since this problem is isolated to FrontPage, I think the general Windows
newsgroup people will point me right back to the FrontPage newsgroup for
assistance. Right?

I am between a rock and a hard place right now. I can author and test my
subwebs and any other webs I have in other places, such as on C: drive. But,
I cannot open, test and publish my G: root directory using FP. While I can
change the JS navigation in XFX ok and test it with a browser, and I could
use other HTML authoring software to author the root based HTML documents, I
cannot publish it to the server without employing a cludge workaround . . .
that is, moving the root stuff to a web just to allow me to publish it to
the server root. Gazooks!

I suspect that there is a setting somewhere that is controlling why
FrontPage 2002 is reacting to my root web in that fashion, JUST SINCE I
INSTALLED THE SERVICE PACKS.

I have tried to delete everything in the REGISTRY ( Oh God I hate the
technical look of the Registry). So, I dont think the settings are there in
a FrontPage area. But, what is doing this?

I looked for server settings in the Registry and didnt find anything that
seemed to refer to drive /G

CLUE: What is the syntax "/G". This is not a normal way to refer to drive
G:/. I suspected a corruption of some software setting when I first saw
that. But the uninstall and Registry celaning should have gotten rid of all
that. But, I am suspscious that this"/G" syntax has some meaning .

What does "/G" mean to you?

What does the teminology of [ Server error: There is no web named "/G"]
bring to your mind in terms of where have you seen wording like this
before?

Thank you for your mentoring, your suggestions, your insight!

See Troubleshooting web folder at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=287402

Also try to clear your web folder outside of windows
1. Close all Office Apps
2. Open a command window (Start-->Run-->cmd)
3. Kill Explorer.exe (Start-->Shutdown-->Alt+Ctrl+Shift and click the Cancel button)
4. At the command prompt type in: cd %userprofile%\application data\microsoft
5. rmdir /s msdaipp
6. Restart Explorer: explorer.exe
