I am about to install a new network entirely
I am looking for tips on a new rollout
I run netware 3.1 and want to know the best way to migrate to windows
2003/2000 AD.
My clients are running windows 98. I will be putting in
new desktops as well running xp pro. What is the best way
to deploy this is it

a. install the servers migrate the data and change all users client config
in 98 to join the 2000/2003 domain

b. install the servers and deploy the desktops at the same time ie windows
xp pro desktops at the same time?

I am looking for the best way I was told that deploying my new Active
directory the first way would make it messy and no good. I was told dont do
that whatever you do. I think it maybe very difficult to deploy a server and
desktops in the same weekend? plus we are not running exchange so email
client files need to be migrated any thoughts

Ryan,

You've got a pretty big project there, especially for a weekend.

The first thing I'd do is get the servers setup with user accounts, files,
printers, etc. Once those are all inplace, get all your new machines setup,
joined to the domain, etc in a staging area (all int he same room,
preferably), get them all configured properly.

Next thing you want to do is setup folders for each of the machines
currently on the LAN on a server, and copy the data over ot the folders.
Move this data onto the new machines.

Finally, swap out the machines.

I could easily see this getting done over a weekend if there were a couple
people and less than 50 or so machines. Above that, you're proabbly going to
want to do this in phases.
