Is there a site to monitor whether your server is up and running...or to
measure downtime?

thanks
Pam

Do a search in IE address bar as:

? Web Site Monitoring

Keep in mind that your web site can be up and running, but the internet
backbone from you location may be unavailable, and the same would apply to
the Monitoring services from their location, etc.

Thanks Thomas - I did a search and found various individual sites and places
to pay to see if your site is down...just seems like more than usual the
place I'm using to host my various websites is 'unavailable' ... I can't
publish or open live from fp, open my control panel on line at their site,
get email from those domains....ect...and am just guessing that its because
their site is down....is that a fair assumption?

thanks
pam

Pam,

To help determine if the server is truly down, vs. you just can't access it,
post a few URL here for other to see if they can reach the sites.

Yes that's a fair assumption.

Can you open any of them in Internet Explorer??
Can you "ping" any of your domains??

Open a DOS or CMD window and type:
ping www.yourdomain.com and then press enter
and see if it responds or times out.

to see if you did it right type:
ping www.yahoo.com
and you'll see how it works.

Steve,

However that would only indicate her ability to access the server, since is
based on her internet connection, not whether or not the server is actually
down.

Hi Thomas.
I should have added:
If the ping "times out" when pinging
your domain, either the server is down or there is
a Domain Name Server problem.

The way to bypass the domain name servers is to ping the
ip address: ping 123.456.789.123 ( using the real IP address of course )
If pinging the IP address returns 4 lines of data the server is running
but there is a DNS problem

If the ping returns 4 lines of data like this: ( this is for yahoo )

the server is up but your web site has problems.
Also she could try accessing one of the sites by IP address and see
if it opens.

If a router is down between her ISP and web server, it would appear as her
web server being down, which may not be the case.

Aah, good point.
I would think with the redundancy built
into most ISP's that would be rare though.

( but there I go thinking again )
;-)

Interesting comments - I did ping yahoo as you suggested just to seewhat it
would do - got a black box that popped up and got a message that it timed
out 4x ... what's with that?

Pam

I also did ping the actual ISP address - it was interesting that I could
access thru OE my hotmail accts and my husband's earthlink acct - but none
of my 'domain' accts would go thru - neither could I upload or open any of
the sites on the domains at this server...however after I left them a NOTE
under their help page (oh btw, their site to log in would not work either -
just their add page) the situation cleared up in about an hour....so who
knows... but at least I have learned how to ping :-)
