Server Based Undelete?

I have a file server running Windows 2000 Server. Since it is less than a
year old I can't justify the upgrade cost for 2003 so it stays. I like
2003's volume shadow copy feature to safeguard all our users who
inadvertently delete files from the server. Are there any server based third
part tools for 2000 server that will undelete files that users delete over
the network? I know there are plenty of workstation tools, but I don't want
that hassle.

Thanks,

Nope Steve. This is a client side tool not a server side one. The server
product is only a management tool for the desktop clients.

What I can't figure out is why deleted items don't just go into the recycle
bin on the server. If I sit down at the console and delete an item it gets
recycled, but if I delete the same item over a network share it's gone for
good. Microsoft blew that one.

Hi

I think you are wrong here, from
http://www1.execsoft.com/pdf/Undelete_Manual.pdf found at
http://www.executive.com/products/documentation/documentation.asp)

Overview of Undelete

Undelete is available in three versions—a Server version and a Workstation
version for professional use, and a Home User Edition for home users.

With the Server version you can undelete and recover files deleted on your
server as well as on remote computers on your network (if they also have
Undelete Server or Workstation installed).

Indeed, Steve is incorrect. Undelete Server is designed to do exactly
what he wants to do. With Undelete Server running on the file server,
the Sys Admin can easily recover files that users have deleted from
their mapped shares. He can also use Undelete Server to remotely
connect to workstations (clients) running Undelete Workstation, and
recover files that are local to the client as well.

Thanks for pointing him in the right direction.
