This is something that I believe I need to start taking a serious look at now. My client machines are getting old and will soon be requiring replacement. There are many that are limping along to keep up with the pace and will require serious hardware replacements to maintain their use.

For this reason, I am contemplating the migration to Windows 7 for my clients on the domain. I have been briefly looking into the situation to see if I absolutely have to upgrade my servers at the same time. In a perfect world, I would do this without hesitation. But in the world ruled by the bottom line, I have to make a case for it either way.

The question is: Is it a requirement to be running Server 2008 to properly administer a domain with Windows 7 clients? Anyone hear of any new Server OS coming out anytime soon?

I can imagine that the answer is a resounding "Yes!", but again, I need to justify spending the amount of money necessary to accomplish this. I am looking for those who may have encountered it in a real world situation. Both good and bad.

aaaaaannnnnddd........go.

p.s. - Would it be a consideration for the mods to put in a "Server" forum in with the OSs? just a thought.

All signs are pointing to Windows 7 and Server 2011 later this year. This includes Home Media Server as well. This is a dumbed down version of server designed to handle the media requests of the "average" home user.

But with this much streaming media on the internets, why would you need a server at home?

::grabs lighter:: :D

If it wasn't for the users, it would be a serious consideration. I don't know much about linux. I did my first Ubuntu installation just recently. It went pretty well. Easy to install, but I am unfamiliar with the command line and how to make it do things. So, use as a server OS may be a while off yet.

This idea did come up as a possible solution for my "off the network" boxes. I would be running Embedded XP, but since it won't be supported and we use OEM installations, MS decided that we need to go to 7. Windows 7 seems to be more media motivated, while I only need something that will run a windows based app.

Sorry to disappoint, no flame.
