Seriously - Where is the PST File in XP????

I have a corrupt Inbox in Outlook 2002. I have launched the repair tool, but
cannot locate a PST file.

I have changed the properties to show me all hidden files and all system
files and nothing shows up in the Outlook folder where it should be, nor when
I do a search.

I know there is an inbox somewhere, because my POP mail keeps retrieving
messages from the ISP server and my inbox count of new messages keeps
increasing - so it's gotta be somewhere!

Help!

Thank you, I finally did find the file there, but still don't know why
"search" did not find the file - Oh well...

One possible reason "search" couldn't find the file is that Windows
hides its system files. On my pc, the "documents and settings" folder
was hidden.

Usually, the "Docuemnts and Settings" folder is not hidden. It is the
C:\Documents and Settings\{user}\Local Settings" folder that is.

Turn on the viewing of hidden folders in My Computer > Tools menu > Folder
option > View tab > Choose "Show hidden files & folders"

And if you are using Search to locate it you need to explicitly specify to
search hidden files and folders, this option is located under "More advanced
options".

I have the same problem and I followed your suggestions and went to Documents
and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and I
searched and I searched for the Inbox Repair Tool and the pst and ost files
but try as I did I couldn't find them. Why?

Because scanpst.exe and scanost.exe are not kept in that location and you
might have moved your pst-file previously?

To find scanpst.exe and scanost.exe see;
http://www.msoutlook.info/question/77

To find your pst-files, go to Control Panel-> Mail-> button Data File
Management...

The lack of detail in your post prevents us from giving us a more direct or
precise answer.

Include at least;
-your version of Outlook (Help-> About)
-type of mail account (POP3, IMAP, Exchange, HTTP, Outlook Connector,
Exchange, other...?)
-any errors in their exact wording as they are presented to you.

The default location of the PST file in XP is C:\Documents and
Settings\<username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft Outlook.

The Local Settings and Application Data folders are hidden, so you'd have to
show hidden files and folders in order to browse to it. You can also just
search your machine for *.pst, but you need to click on "More advanced
options" in the Search window and check the "Search hidden files and
folders" box.

Location of outlook PST file is

drive:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook

If repair tool couldn't locate it through search option, it might be
possible it is hidden. make sure you have enable option to view hidden file.

if still you are getting problem to fix problem of corrupted Inbox, you can
use another repair tool which easily locate PST file and repair it.

That is the default location. Since users can move or create .pst files in
other paths, and even on different drives, the best place to check is in
Outlook itself.

In Outlook and in the tree list for your message store, right-click on the
root node (i.e., Outlook Today folder), Properties, Advanced. The Filename
field tells you where is the .pst file. Another method is to use File ->
Data File Management, pick the message store (the default one if you want
the one for your current message store), and click Settings. That way you
have Outlook telling you from where *it* is getting the .pst file. Of
course, this assumes that Outlook can load okay. The OP never mentioned if
the problem was Outlook refused to load.
