serious video problem

OK,
I updated my nvidia drivers via Microsoft's update page,
and instead of restarting, I shutdown, as it was late, and
then turned the machine on the next morning. Now the
drivers are all messed up. Even the startup screens before
Windows starts (I have XP) are garbled, and I can only get
it to run on the lowest resolution and color settings.
I've un- and reinstalled the video drivers a lot, and done
everything else Microsoft's none-too-helpful KB Article
293078 suggests, short of "replace your video card",
something I'd rather not do, and I doubt it'd fix the
problem anyway. Does anyone know what to do about this?
Any advice would be appreciated,
thanks

Hi,
What I would recommend is to start Windows in Safe Mode,
go into the Device Manager to your video card settings
and roll back your drivers. Then, reinstall the drivers
as instructed by the vendor.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. I tried that a couple times with
a couple exciting variations, and it's still all screwy,
unfortunately. I'm sort of stuck, as nvidia has no
support, the store I bought the PC from is a hundred miles
away, and I have the feeling Microsoft will want to be
rewarded handsomely for their trouble, if I call them to
fix it. But, y'know, I'm almost getting used to 640x480 :|

Have you tried using System Restore to go back to the
configuration before you upgraded the video drivers?

yup. That didn't work either.

That is to say, I used System Restore, and it functioned
correctly, but the video is still messed up.

I have an NVidia. And also had problems with the drivers
being a bit buggy here and there. One driver made the
screen blink. It was like I was at a club scene or
something.

Do this at your own risk:

what I did was uninstalled the video drivers from the
device manager. After that, with out restarting. I did a
search for a NVidia files(searched for: NV). And deleted
them all(only if they pertain to NVidia). And then
restart the computer. Then it should load a default
video driver. Then you should be able to go to Windows
Update to Download a new version of the driver.

But that's how I got that buggy video driver off my
computer and a new and better one.

Hope this could be of use.
