Serious "issue" with Tweak UI for Windows XP!!

I just discovered a serious "issue" with Tweak UI for Windows XP!!

I tried to change the icon for a new Desktop folder I created to another
icon which I thought more appropriate. Windows instead displays one for this
folder altogether different than the one I selected! This is a problem by
itself but when I tried to use Tweak UI to "repair" the folder icon I
discovered that it not only did not help the icon but as an extra added
"bonus" it totally reorganized ALL my Desktop icons in alphabetical order on
the left of the screen!!!

I spent a LOT of time over a LONG period of time getting all those "just
right" and this VERY STUPID program (a Microsoft concoction of course!)
screws them ALL up in the blink of an eye without as much as a warning!!!

Another GEM of a reason for Microsoft to have some serious competition from
somewhere, only God knows where!

DWK

On the 'repair icons' screen, it quite clearly states:

Warning: Repairing icons may cause icons to lose any custom positions.

And instead of taking shots at MS when you are so clearly to blame, you
might find your time better spent repositioning your icons..

Mike! Mike! Mike!

You CLEARLY must work for Microsoft!!! You CANNOT seriously think that
Microsoft is not to blame here! Everyone in the world knows that Microsoft
is populated by screwups! They deserve the "shots" for this and other gems
such as WIA interface (ARRRRRG!), OE6 folder column idiocy, OE6 no print
preview, "critical updates" that suddenly cause ones computer to henceforth
refuse to power down!! I could go on but, what's the point!!!

Please note... there was NO WARNING of any kind that this icon
re-positioning would happen!!! I don't know where you think that warning
you indicate came from but is certainly is NOT from Tweak UI!!! ):O|

I posted this *WARNING* in the event that someone else might see it BEFORE
they try to use Tweak UI to do this sort of thing! I have since reorganized
my Desktop (again), thank you very much, but it is a lot of work and I
should not have had to do it!

Tweak UI for Windows XP.. version 2.10.0.0.. repair screen.. it is quite
obvious..

Some of your other points are entirely subjective, and while they may bother
you, to others it is 'no problem'..

Also, you are not obliged to use Windows or any components of Windows if you
do not like them..

For my part, I have XP and a variety of other apps, MS and others, that run
perfectly well and do all that I require of them.. there are plenty more out
there who feel the same way as I do..

Mike isn't a Softie... That being said hasn't it occurred to you that
changing the computer from it's recommended settings by the manufacturer is
likely to cause problems and that it's a potentially damaging thing? This
software clearly stated, when you downloaded it, that it was unsupported as
well. People use "tweak" applications and then rant because of the results
(or in your case post a "warning" for other people when it's already stated
that it's not supported and thus may not be of benefit to you. Using
tweaking software can have, and often does, undesirable results. End of
story. It's an ingrained part of tweaking and taking it out on an MVP or
Microsoft doesn't do you any good, instead... Don't push that button again.

1. Where did you select the new icon from? Shell32 or ......

2. The description clearly reads:

Rebuilds all Explorer icons and removes unused Explorer icons from memory.

Rebuild icons when you find that Explorer is displaying the wrong icon fro a
program or shortcut.

Warning: Repairing icons may cause icons to lose any custom positions.

3. Which part didn't you read? That said, how did MS mess up YOUR desktop,
when you are the one who tried changing the default folder icon, which is
native to XP. Speaking of native to XP, TUI isn't. That took a separate
download which YOU did do. Lastly, TUI was not written by MS but by Raymond
Chen (nor supported by MS).

4. Chill and worry about something that will matter in 90 years.

5. Have a great day!

90 Years?
I'll probably be worrying about where butterflies go when it rains :>)

I think you need to look again. Right there on the pane where you
pick a shortcut overlay, it says that it's a system-wide setting
and then says

"WARNING: Changing the shortcut overlay may cause icons to lose any
custom positions."

And no, I don't work for the Evil Empire. But I do try to read
what's on a screen before I click OK or Apply.

I agree with those who have said there's a warning for rearranging
icons and it's the OP's own fault that he ignored it.

They would have done well to stop there and not bring up the
"unsupported" red herring. For Microsoft to put the software on its
site for download and then claim it's unsupported is just silly.

Besides, unless you're a really huge corporate user, ALL Microsoft
software is unsupported. If something goes wrong, you're on your
own. If Microsoft supported its software there'd be no need for
these forums, would there? :-)

Stan, not wanting to get into a flame war over this and me coming in
late, I looked at my version 2.00.1.0 of Tweak UI and it doesn't give
that warning under the shortcut overlay section. Maybe there are
earlier versions or later versions than the one that I have that
did/do but mine surely doesn't.

Ed

Hi Stan,

From my standpoint, if one is familiar with the system registry, then use
it. If you are not and depend on third party tweakers, accept what you
don't know and at least have the knowledge to comprehend (what or) how you
are compromising your system in the long hall. Don't complain about it,
after it is done.

I have to agree with Ed. I too have 2.00.1.0 of Tweak UI. No warning there. Not
that I am defending DWK's rantings, but, before you chastise this person, you
might want to check for yourselves.

ching... 2 cents!

Hmm -- that would account for why the OP adamantly maintained it
wasn't there and Mike Hall as adamantly maintained that it was.

which as you see is a different version from yours. (My version is
the same as Mike's.)

Well then, I seem to have a earlier version than the one in question.
However, my version has never repositioned the desktop icons during
the specific operation. So the real funny thing here is the fact that
they produced a newer version where they added that warning and which,
in fact, does reposition the icons when the earlier version didn't
reposition the icons and thus did not need the warning.

Leads one to believe that newer is not necessarily better. Did
someone say this thing is made by Microsoft?

Ed
