Reinstalling from scratch should be the LAST resort - please post your
problem here before re-installing - see if we cannot come up with an answer.
Secondly, if the copy of Windows XP you purchased came installed on the
computer - it is possible it is an OEM copy. If that is true and the
business *is* gone, then you are out of luck. It is up to the reseller to
support OEM copies of the OS. Not Microsoft.
However, if it was a retail copy - you can contact Microsoft and they will
be able to get you a new number.
And - if you can actually get into your machine at all, you may be able to
get your CD key using one of the methods discussed here:
