serial to usb adapter problems

We have an old barcode scanner that connects using the serial port, so we got
an adapter to connect it through usb.
With a bit of fiddling and making sure device manger properties match those
of the barcode program (data bits parity flow control etc.) the barcode
scanner will download the info to the database.
But at the end of the day when we are gone and the server backs up the data
something goes wrong. The next morning the program cannot download the data
unless we restart the computer.
Any ideas as to why this is happening, I can get more specific if needed.

I would contact the database program tech support. They will have a
workaround or tell you what new barcode scanner to purchase that will
work with their program. A new barcode scanner will not be terribly
expensive and that will solve your issues.
