Download and install the WinXP-specific motherboard chipset drivers
from Gateway.

no the bios is not listing any ports or I/O devices.

If the BIOS doesn't see the ports, the OS certainly won't. Does
Gateway offer a fix for the BIOS?

Then you need to get the BIOS to show them first. This model does have
com and lp ports?

"Both versions of the Solo 1150 are "legacy-free models"
replacing serial and parallel ports with USB ports."

Do you see serial or parallel port connectors ? I cannot find
pictures of the thing. Maybe if there was a port replicator
or some external gadget ? It really looks kinda sparse on the
I/O features. It has a PCMCIA slot, so you can stick adapters
in there.

no that's just it,nothing about Com or Lp ports,no updates from gateway
only a couple for modem, but that is for windowsME

I just did 100 push ups. This notebook belongs to a friend who
wants to use the serial port.I'm going out to get a new pair of
glasses,There is no COM. port. There are only USB ports.please
accept my apologies. Now what kind of adapter can I use? thanks

There are plenty of USB-to-serial and USB-to-parallel adapters
available, just google for 'em and take your pick.

However, be aware that some peripheral devices are finnicky and may
not work properly through such adapters.

You do need a usb to serial adapter. I got one to connect my old, old
Palm Pilot to my new computer than has no serial port. Adapter came with
a CD which has the needed program to make the adapter work. Cost was
about $15 at a local PC shop, perhaps cheaper online.
