I have an application which is started automatically in AUTOSTART. This app
accesses 8 COM-ports on a special serial board. Sometimes I receive the
error, that a port is busy.
Definitely there is no other user app accessing the ports.
I already use /"Fastdetect" to disable W2k to search for a mouse during boot.
So now I suspect either the device enumerator to search for a modem OR
McAfee antivirus. Any ideas how to figure out or any similar effects ?

Well you could try waiting untill the the application is up and running
before enabling McAfee and see if the eliminate the A-V as the culprit.
