is there any way to locate a serial number of a computer
is the computer has been stolen and you do not have it
written down any where

Contact the computer seller?
There is no way for the computer to be traced without 3rd party
software installed.

What do you mean 3rd party software? The computer has
windows XP and other files like Microsoft Office.

3rd party=a company other than Microsoft in this case.
There is software available you can purchase and install on the
computer.
If the computer is subsequently stolen, it can phone home to help
identify the location.
Once the computer is stolen, it is to late.

There is nothing like this as part of Windows or Office.

Even if you had the serial number for the unit, the chances of ever getting
it back are anything between infinitesimally small and zero.. fill out an
insurance claim form, and hope that you can't be proved negligent..

He means, computers don't come with a standard feature by which they can be
traced. Even if you had the serial numbers of all the software and the
software showed as registered to you it would not be proof the computer was
yours as such things can be copied and forged.

There are third party as in Non-Microsoft software packages that offer some
of the same protections as LoJack for autos. However, as is the case with
autos, such packages are add-ons and not standard.
