Serial mouse use with Windows 2000

I have an AT system on which a friend of mine wanted Windows 2000
installed. I installed Win2000 on two different P233mmx systems with
relative ease but when installation was complete, I'd have no mouse
pointer.

After wasting time reinstalling 2-3 times, I did more research and it was
like pulling teeth... but I found out that Win2000 does not automatically
support serial mice.

So... do any of you brilliant people out there have a solution for me?
Everything else has detected and I can "surf the web" though it's useless
with no mouse. I suppose I could go out and buy a USB PCI card and buy a
USB mouse, but that's spending money on an old system that's not all that
great.

I've seen a couple of suggestions that the boot.ini file be modified but
can't get many details. Apparently it can be done but the solution evades
me at the moment.

Any help is appreciated.

check under device manager to see if the serial port is installed
if not install it under new hardware

I've used serial mice on Win2k server. (Got one running
right now.) Make sure your serial port is enabled in
the BIOS.

I don't remember whether it was auto-detect or not, but
it wasn't difficult enought that I had to go download a
driver or anything. (Since I don't remember, I'd bet it
auto-detected.)

Boot.ini has zero to do with a serial mouse.
 
like another poster has said ..serial port must be enabled in the
bios. If you are running a win modem many times the serial ports are
disabled.
