serial cables?

I am trying to transfer files from a laptop to a desktop using a serial cable. I am using the "files and settings transfer wizard" on XP but the two computers cannot find each other when I go to autodetect (the direct cable connection male/male cable is attached to both)

Any idea why the wizard cannot seem to find either computer?

Thanks guys....I couldn't get it to work, so I got a network card and transferred the files through my router.
