I am trying to load windows xp on a Serial ATA HDD. The
bios can see it, but windows says that it is not there.
I am about to pull my hair out. I have tried it on two
seperate motherboards, but it is the same thing on both.
Any ideas?

I installed a SATA HD with two ATA HD's on an Asus board recently.
Are you pressing F6 and loading the drivers when installing XP? If
you got the drive OEM you'll have to download the drivers off the net
first. The other way to do this is to run the diskmgmt.msc tool and
initialize the drive. I've had no problems using both.

The xp setup will not let you browse to the sata driver. It must be
correctly laid out on a floppy. Try putting txtsetup.oem in the root of the
floppy, then the separate folder with the rest of your driver. You should be
prompted during setup to press F6 to install the driver.

As with the reply to the OP in this thread......

In general, you'll need to have the SATA drivers available on a floppy
disk ready for the install process - you'll find them on your mainboard CD
or manufacturers website, or if relevant on the CD with a PCI card-based
controller.

You may also need to consult the mainboard manual for appropriate BIOS
settings.

As the XP set-up begins you will be prompted to 'Press F6 to specify
third-party RAID or SCSI drivers' - at this point you should press F6 and,
when asked, insert the floppy disk with the relevant drivers. Select the
appropriate driver when asked and continue with the setup. There may be
some delays during this process and the set-up may appear to be continuing
without recognising the key-press - so don't panic.

When successful you'll be able to select the HD to install on.
If you are not given the SATA HD as an option for installation you have not
completed the procedure
correctly. Check you are using the correct drivers, have any relevant BIOS
updates for your mainboard, and try again.
