Separating Part of a Diagram

I have a diagram of an inverted triangle, filled with color. In a second
slide, I want to change the color of the top third of the triangle and
insert text over that. In a third slide, I want to only change the color of
the middle third of the triangle (with text), and in a fourth slide to do
this with the bottom third. Is there a way to do this? I'm thinking that I
need to layer the diagram on each slide with a shape and then fill that with
a different color than the rest of the diagram, but I don't know how to get
the right shape or to invert it.
 
Insert duplicate slides and simply make the changes on each of the slides.
You should be able to edit the individual components by "slow" clicking on
them.
 
I've duplicated the slide, but I don't understand how to slow click on part
of it to change the color of one band of a triangle without changing the
other bands. It wasn't created in parts. What do you mean by slow clicking?
 
If I understand correctly what you're doing, I think if you turn off
AutoLayout on the diagramming toolbar, you can change just the one color.

If not, then I'd probably just draw the triangle pieces "freehand" using
autoshapes. Specifically, I'd use the trapezoid (drawing toolbar |
Autoshapes | Basic Shapes | Trapezoid) for the base of the triangle, use the
rotation tools (Drawing toolbar | Draw | Rotate or Flip | Flip Vertical) to
position the wider edge on the bottom, and then play with the yellow diamond
on the shape until it's at the angle I wanted. Then I'd duplicate the shape
and resize it as appropriate until I got to the top, where I'd add a
triangle.
 
Glenna's suggestion will work fine but you can apply animations to just one
part of a diagram also if you wish.

Apply the animation eg emphasis > change fill color and then in the custom
animation pane click on the little double arrow below the name entry to
expand the animations. You should now be able to see the individual
trapezoids animations?

Select and "remove" any animations that you dont want. If you repeat this
you can get different color changes for each trapezoid
 
OK, here's the problem. The inverted triange wasn't created in pieces. I
tried Echo's suggestion to do it that way and came out with three decent
looking pieces, but one really odd triangle when I put them together. I like
the idea of applying animation to part of the diagram, but again, I can't
see individual trapezoids in the animation pane because the triangle wasn't
made in pieces. Or am I missing something?

I'm going to try this another way. I didn't make the original triangle, but
I see that I can easily insert a new one from the diagram toolbar that's
already in sections, so I can animate the sections separately. Now my
problem is that the diagram triangle needs to be inverted (i.e., with the
point of the triangle at the bottom), and I can't figure out how to do that
with a diagram. I know how to flip an auto shape, but I don't see how to
flip the diagram.
 
Try inserting the diagram, cut and paste special as an enhanced metafile.
Ungroup once > flip and then ungroup again.
