Separate phone and fax lines

Hello,
I would really appreciate your help with this. Computer died, sent in to be
fixed and it required new modem (was only 8 mths old). New modem installed
and now every time I send or receive a fax on stand alone fax machine the
computer starts itself up automatically. The home phone has one line and the
fax and the computer share another line. I am technologically challenged at
the best of times, so pretend I'm two years old when you give me the answer
please. Many thanks.

Simple answer is that the fax machine is interfaced via USB, and the P/C is
set to turn on when USB activity is detected.
(It may be that a BIOS setting, and possibly a windows setting needs to be
changed.)

1. Right-click on "My Computer" and then left-click on "Properties."

2. In the System Properties dialog that opens, click the "Hardware" tab.

3. Click the "Device Manager" button.

4. Find the line that says "Modems" and click the + to its left.

5. Double-click the entry for your modem.

6. In the Modem Properties dialog that opens, click the "Power
Management" tab.

7. Make sure that the box to "Allow this device to bring the computer
out of standby" is UNchecked.

8. OK your way out.
 
Thank you Lem. As stated I am technologically blonde and I need this kind of
detail. I followed your directions to the T and when I got to the place
where I had to uncheck the box, it was already unchecked. Any other ideas??

That should have done it.

Try checking the box, then OK your way out. Then re-boot. Then go back
and UNcheck the box, OK your way out and re-boot again. There shouldn't
be the need for this sort of nonsense ... but you never know.

When you said that sending/receiving a fax with the standalone fax
machine causes the computer to "start itself up," did you mean that it
tries to answer the fax? If so, try this:

Go to Printers and Faxes.

If there is an icon that says Fax, continue; otherwise post back and
tell me that there is no such icon (and I'll scratch my head to see if I
can come up with something else).

Right-click on the Fax icon and then left-click on Properties

Click on the "Devices" tab and then on the "Properties" button.

Click on the "Receive" tab and UNcheck the box to "Enable device to
receive" (I'm assuming that you don't want to use your computer to
receive faxes because you have a standalone fax machine).

OK your way out.

P.S. What is the make/model of your modem?
 
Thanks Lem. Tried adjusting via faxes and printers icon as suggested then
tested. the computer still turned itself on. I did notice however that the
setting tells the computer to answer the fax after two rings. the fax
machine also answers at two rings. If I set the computer to answer after say
4 rings and the fax has already picked up at 2 rings, will this solve the
problem do you think? Thanks again. I havent tried your other suggestion as
I am about to walk out the door and we only can get dial up here, takes
forever. Will try that tonight.

I have changed the modem setting back and rebooted and changed them back
again and rebooted. Computer is still turning itself on as soon as the fax
rings. The modem type is "ESS ES56H-PI data fax voice modem (COM4) if this
means anything to you. Thank you again for your time and help.

I'm sorry, I really can't think of anything else to try.

You should get in touch with whoever repaired your computer and
installed the new modem. Do not let them tell you, "it's supposed to
work that way." It's not.

It's possible that the driver for the modem is either not the most
recent one or is corrupted. I don't really think this is the problem,
and given your level of expertise, you may not want to try to install a
new driver yourself, but if you want to give it a try, read on.

I can't tell the brand/model of modem you have. The information you
supplied is for the chip (on the modem) that actually does the work.
You can get a generic driver from the chip manufacturer at
http://www.esstech.com/techsupp/drivers.shtm
If you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, the link for
the driver for your modem is in the next-to-last line, at the right end
of the line: ftp://ftp.esstech.com/pub/modem/pci/Z1/XP/V543067XP.zip

Just below that, click on the FAQ link for directions. Note the first
paragraph of the answer to the second question.

There are directions here http://www.esstech.com/techsupp/faq.shtm to
find out who actually manufactured your modem, but it will require
opening the case and looking for a label stuck on the modem card.

ESS does offer e-mail tech support, but I don't know how responsive they
are. If you want to try that, first get the identifying info as
described here: http://www.esstech.com/techsupp/faq-identify.shtm#modem

Thanks for all your help Lem. I suppose I could always turn the computer off
at the power point when not using it! :-) I think I will take it into a
reputable computer shop and have them have a look at it.

turn on the computer by ringing the fax number. I tried to follow your
instructions but can't find "modem" line in Device Manager. I do have a
dedicated fax line for HP LaserJet 3100 MFP and it is working. So where is
the modem? Please advise.

Actually I was directed to this thread for another problem. My Win XP
computer will not go on a timed standby because, "The device driver for the
'Printer Port Logical Interface' device is preventing the machine from
entering standby. Please advise.

A LaserJet 3100 MFP is a stand-alone device that has its *own* built-in
fax modem. Device Manager shows hardware that has been installed in
your computer.
