Where can I find information on separating a child domain
from the root domain in Active Directory? I want to use
only the child domain. Is it possible and how do I go
about removing it?

No. It can't be done. The forest root is always the forest root and a
child domain will always be a child to that root.

More to the point, why do you want to remove it?

I need to separate users in a child domain onto a new
network segment, where they will not be able to see the
root domain. We would like to do this as easy as
possible, without creating a new Active Directory Domain.
Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks

John,

What you would normally do is to create the child domain and then use ADMT
v2 to migrate all of the user, computer and appropriate groups from the
parent domain to the child domain. I do not see a way to do this any other
way. You will need to create the child domain. So, if you do not want to
have to create any new Active Directory Domains I do not see this being
successful. It is still in the same domain tree so you are not creating any
new trees. If you forest root domain is 'yourdomain.com' then your child
domain would be 'child.yourdomain.com'. If you are concerned about e-mail
addresses you can always add that second Recipient Policy.

However, Dave asks the best question: what are you trying to accomplish?

HTH,

Cary
