In Outlook I was able to switch between accounts. This enabled me to receive
messages of my private mail without receiving business mail (and which I do
not wish to download if I am not working, since my colleagues will have to
download it onto their computers). Can I do this with Windows Mail as well
(separate accounts which only receive mail when I activate the account)?

I do not recall the Windows Mail former incarnation, Outlook Express (OE)
having this capability.

Outlook (i.e Outlook 98, 2000, 2003, 2007), yes. But not Outlook Express.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong. Years ago when I tried this with OE
all my mail went into one Inbox.

In Outlook Express this feature was known as Identities.
Windows Mail no longer has that feature. You can purchase a third party
add-on which gives you back the equivalent of Identities:

Another option is to set up a separate Windows user account.

Just go to that accounts properties and set it not to include that account
when sending and receiving.
