Sent Items Disappearing

For some reason, after an e-mail has been sent and it is
moved to the sent items folder, it doesn't always stay
there. Go back a day later and some of the e-mails you
sent will be there, and some won't be. It seems to be
doing this at random.

We're utilizing Outlook 2003 with Exchange 2000 Post SP3
Rollup on the backend. The cache exchange feature is
also being used if that makes a difference. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Justin Swall

Hi Justin,

The issue you describe could be caused by quite a few things. Here's the
short list of the first things that come to mind, and a few questions for
you.

- Do the mails ever come back? If not, are they visible through OWA?
Change your Outlook view to a "by category" view, and see if the items show
as well.
- Do you have a file level anti-virus scanner installed on your Exchange
server? If so, please please please make sure it is not set to scan the
M:\, Exchsrvr, or Inetsrv directories.
- Is the issue occuring for multiple users? If not, then it is probably
isolated to one specific machine, or user. Try taking the problem user to
another machine, and seeing if their missing mails show up again
- Start Outlook with a /cleanviews switch (Start -> Run _. outlook
/cleanviews -> OK) to see if any mails are being hidden b a corrupted view.
- Start Outlook in /safe mode, and see if this makes any difference. (See
above)

Basically if the mails are missing everywhere, then something is moving
them either on the client side, or on the server side. AV on the server is
a good culprit for removing mails from the database. If the mails reappear
through changing your view, or through OWA, then there is just something
damaged about them, and Outlook is unable to display them to you. This
could also be caused by a local AV program scanning your OST file.
