My video plays fine on movie maker, but when i click send to dv camera, it
takes an hour before it starts up, and then another hour to actually start
recording! And as it records and when I play it back it plays slowly and it
is choppy and the audio sound seems strobed. I've tried many things to fix
it, but it won't work right. It always recorded and played back fine on my
other computer. Does anyone know what I can do? Help!

And how is your DV cam connected to PC? Via Firewire? Via USB?
Is your DV cam connected to it's dedicated power supply, and not relying
on it's battery?
What file format is the original clip that plays fine in WMM but is
problematic
in transferring to DV cam?

Um, I think usb. The camera is plugged up into an electrical outlet. The file
format is windows media audio/video file (wma). Well, maybe the cord is
firewire, I don't really know. We had to install the plug in in our computer
for it.

There is a big difference between USB1 and a Firewire. USB2 is faster but as
far as I know only the higher priced cameras use the USB2. I use a third
program(WinDV its free) for converting to AVI then edit the film but AVI are
really big files. about 12 minutes of DV tape is about 2.3gig or so of AVI.
but it is good quality and ease to edit. A second hard drive for editing is
something to think about if you do a lot of editing of large files. You can
convert to mpg but there are issues in editing with motion and getting a
good split sometimes.

actually, i do have a alternate hard drive just for my video editing, and I
did install windv but it didn't work for me. I changed the file to an avi and
when I clicked the button to send it to camera, it said error: error at
the bottom. Any idea's?

Unfortunately you supply little detail to be able to coherently guide you.
I think you actually mean it is a WMV file format clip.

DV camera's will only accept their own file format being DV-AVI.
DV cameras will only accept such a clip via Firewire.
NOT all DV camera's have the input activated -
Some are In/Out, some are only Output.
You haven't supplied the details of the camera.
This will be detailed in the instruction manual or
you could do a google on the exact model, If the
input is not activated then you cannot transfer back
to DV tape.

Windows Movie Maker can convert the WMV clip to DV-AVI
And as long as your camera is connected via Firewire and
it has an activated Firewire Input, then WMM can then transfer
the converted clip to the DV cam.

First check in Device Manager that your PC is actually
equipped with Firewire card. There should be two entries
in Device Manager:
IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers
and under Network Adapter headings, will detail
the actual number of 1394 (Firewire) cards.

You cannot transfer movie clips to DV cassette via USB.
USB and Firewire are two very different and incompatible
Bus standards.
The USB connection is for transferring as data, the images
on a flash card that most DV cameras also have.

Whatever the cord is, i don't think that's really my problem because I have
seen it work before with the same camera just a different computer, so I
think there is something wrong with my compuer, I just don't know what! Do
you know how I can make WinDV work for me? A user named PapaJohn told me how
to use it and I did exactly what he said but the message error:error came up.

So it's never functioned on that PC?

The first thing to do is check your hardware.
I'm assuming you haven't checked device manager?
You are going to do that now..............................

This is a pictorial guide on how to access Device Manager,
Though this guide is not specific for a firewire PCI card,
the process is identical.
a) Once you have accessed Device Manager -
scroll, locate, and open the sub-headings for: "Network Adapters".
b) You may have a number of devices listed within Network Adapters,
c) You are looking specifically for an entry: "Net Adapter 1394"
d) If you do not have an entry for this device, then your PC is not
equipped with firewire. If so, post back.
e) If "Net Adapter 1394" is listed, you want it NOT to be marked
with either a "Questionmark" or "Exclaimation marK" ( ? or ! )
f) RIGHT click on the entry, and then select "Properties" from
the sub menu.
A dialog pane will appear, you want the device to be listed as:
"This device is working properly"
Post back exact details of what you find.

I found a 1394 Net Adapter listed with 1394 first, no ? or !, just a picture
of a green computer chip thingy. Properties said "This device is working
properly".

Hey I replied to your entry above, but I just wanted to let you know I'm
gonna be out of town for a week or maybe 2, so please don't forget my
question! I'll check up to see if you responded whenever I find an available
computer! Thanks so much for your help!
