Sending/Receving/Seeing E-mail --- So? THIS is an IMPROVEMENT?

Having wasted my entire day trying to get help on Windows Mail from Gateway
and the alleged Knowledge Base, I now turn here. And after a long and
frustating series of attempts to get here, I now BEG for assistance as
follows:

I purchased a new Gateway computer with Vista last Monday (Lundi Gras where
I live) after my old XP Pro machine bit the dust the day before. On Ash
Wednesday, having transferred my data to the new machine and installed Office
2007 , I learned from my ISP (Cox Cable) that Outlook 2007 was not (and might
well never be) supported and I would be forced to use the new Windows Mail. I
set up my most mission-critical addresses, imported my Outlook e-mail and all
seemed to be well.

The next day, much to my surprise , only two out of the three addresses were
working. My most -mission critical address errored out. (No.. I hadn't
changed a thing in my sleep!) Later that day that address would work and one
of the others would error out. Occaisionally known of the e-mail would be
visible due to alleged insufficient memory/file space issues, even though WM
was then only program running with a 213 out of 300 GB free on my hard drive
and 1 GB of memory.

As the weekend has progressed (or should I say devolved) , now none of the
e-mail addresses are functioning and I'm getting the following error messge:

An unknown error has occurred. Protocol: SMTP, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No,
Error Number: 0x800C0148

Additionally the few e-mail messages I had heretofore received have
disappeared, as have all the folders other than the Inbox folder. I can
nevertheless see them in the hidden files on my hard drive so I know there
still there... somewhere!

How can I get this abortion fo an e-mail program functioning properly? Is
there someway to reinstall it?

Hello,

Have you tried another email program, such as Windows Live Mail Desktop
beta? Try that other program, and see if it fixes your problem.

Please stop answering and saying to posters who has issues with Windows Mail to go and switch to Windows Live Mail Beta. Instead try and help them solve their problems within Windows Mail

This is usually caused by an anti-spam program or an anti-virus set to scan
email.

Turn off email scanning in your anti-virus. It provides no added
protection. After doing so it may be necessary to reset the server names in
OE.

Email scanning slows down Sending and Receiving, sometimes enough that OE
times out. Since some of the received messages have large (often virus)
attachments, which exasperates the problem.
Some Comcast users have found it necessary to totally uninstall Norton and
switch to the free AVG with mail scanning off. Norton invented email
scanning and here's what they say:

"Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions."
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...6d4e006aaa94/4ba5fc8ef939c44c88256c7500723cf0

"...your computer is protected if Auto-Protect is enabled. Auto-Protect
scans any incoming files, including email attachments, when the files are
saved to your hard drive."
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001100907323806

"NAV provides multiple layers of protection. Email scanning is just one of
those layers. Even if you are not running Email Scanning, your computer is
protected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments by NAV
Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect will scan any incoming files, including email
attachments, as they are saved to your hard drive. To make sure that
Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled
and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus
definitions."

So Symantec used to say this often and clearly. The newer stuff doesn't
have the statement included as it was considered an embarrassment. If you
know anyone who programs for Norton try to get them to talk about it.

Why did they say it woldn't be supported? Do they use something like MSN
for email instead and not a POP3 server?

According to their web site they're using a POP3 account. Sounds like
they're Non-Technical Support.

Do you know the POP3 and SMTP server names for the account?

http://support.cox.com/sdccommon/asp/contentredirect.asp
Is for Outlook Express but similar for Windows Mail.

The same data would be used for Outlook 2007.

Looking at their info on their web site it does lack the information, which
may be you have to be on their connection to see.

Port 0 is incorrect for SMTP. Before you correct it, turn off the email
scanning function of your anti-virus program, since it may be
involved in changing the port numbers.

If that's the complete error, it's a good catch on the port but then no
server info is showing as well which makes me think they don't have the info
setup.

I think that's an old OE error message that incorrectly specifies the port
number. <G>

As others have indicated, its probably your antivirus software that is
screwing things up.

I tried turing off McAfee e-mail scanning af6ter visiting this forum
yesterday. Doing so had no effect on my problem. It continues yet this
morning.

The "never" may have been a bit of sarcasm on my part as a result of my
frustration. There was some indication from Cox of a "late April" date, but,
by then, I'll be out of business if this problem doesn't get corrected.

All three accounts I have set up indicate Port 25 for SMTP and Port 110 for
POP3, which, to the best of my knowledge and belief, are the correct ports.
This setup makes the error message even more confusing. Indeed the fact that
they used to work, even sporadically, and now not at all, is a wonderment.

Do you have the correct POP3 and SMTP server names? Username and password
correct?

McAfee may already have done its damage and corrupted your
MessageStore. Elsewhere in this newsgroup you'll find
instructions on how to renew the MessageStore. In the
meantime, and until these Windows Mail problems are better
understood, I'd suggest using web mail if you are
desperate for mail access. If you happen to have a spare
copy of, say, Office 2003, you could install its Outlook
program to handle your mail for the time being.

My next suggestion is to uninstall McAfee. No way I would let McAfee or
Norton onto a Vista machine. They're bad enough on earlier Windows
versions.

Yeah, it seems to have gotten worse, and everyone is getting machines with
one or the other on them.

The new Motion Tablet I bought in November didn't have anything on it but
WinXP Pro, Finger Print software and a few Motion utilities. No Anti-virus,
anti-spyware or any of that crap that's usually on new machines. Maybe
because they knew I was an MVP.

Must've been. Didn't know you got a new one.

People are reporting their Gateways and Dells are coming with the AV junk
preloaded on them, and who knows what else?
