Sending options malfunction

I have a new computer with Windows Vista. Windows mail is set up to send and
receive at start up and to send messages immediately. It manages to work at
start up but subsequently places all written messages in the outbox (despite
being on line). It also ignores requests to send and receive unless there is
nothing in the outbox to send. The only way to send a message is therefore to
exit Windows Mail and then re-enter. It's not a huge problem but a bit of a
nuisance. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee or Norton
security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled, not just
disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

I rebooted the machine from the product recovery disk a few days ago on the
advice of my retailer. Would that not have uninstalled Norton in the process?
It certainly made no difference to the email situation.

Thanks for all your help.

It depends on what all your computer reseller included on the
recovery disk. Go to Control Panel, Security Center. In the
category "Malware protection" click the down arrow, and it should
report which antivirus is active. If it is McAfee or Norton, go to
Programs and Features and uninstall that antivirus.

Reboot, then if you still get an error message when using Windows
Mail, right-click on that error text, copy, then paste into a reply here.

I have uninstalled Norton (using both the uninstall on my computer and
Symantec's own program), removed and reinserted my email account.
Unfortunately all to no avail. Windows Mail continues to ignore its own
settings. There is no error message; it just won't send without exiting and
the re-entering.

Thanks for the advice. I followed the instructions for resetting WM twice but
this didn't help. In the end I installed Mozilla Thunderbird (as I found
Windows Live Mail a bit confusing) and AVG antivirus. Email now working
perfectly. Unfortunately there is a new problem now. I reinstalled Works 8.5
(supplied with computer and deleted when I used the product recovery disk
some days ago) but now can't view .wps documents written with my older
version of Works on my previous computer. A message appears saying the file
may have been corrupted. This current machine was able to open them before I
changed the email and antivirus software - I think.
Any ideas?

Sorry, I'm not familiar with Works issues.
You might try the newsgroup microsoft.public.works.win .
