Sending messages with Windows Mail

I was sending mail just fine for several months and then suddenly, I can
receive but not send. I get the following and the mail stays in the outbox:
The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'Re:
[Fwd: Fw: FW: BEST DUI EVER]', Account: 'pop.charter.net (1)', Server:
'smtp.charter.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 you are not allowed
to send mail to <[email protected]>', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server
Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

I have Windows Vista... and my anti virus protection is Mcafee. Any help in
simple, layman' s terms would be most appreciated! Thanks!
 
Before you do anything else, uninstall your antivirus program.
Windows Mail is not compatible with McAfee.
After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download and
install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

This may not solve your WM sending problem. But before I
give you further advice, please answer this question:
When you get that error message, are you using a laptop
away from home?

No, no laptop. Thanks, i'll try your suggestion. I hate it though, since I've
paid for a year of Mcafee! Oh well!

Hello! I have the same problem: I suddenly got an error msg (the same as
stated here) today and I never had this problem before. I have Norton
Internet Security and tried to turn off the outgoing e-mail scanning, but did
not help. Pls more advices.

PS: for some addresses I can send e-mail out. Strange. And I am using a
laptop at home.

Turning Norton off is not sufficient. It must be uninstalled completely.

But why should Norton or McAfee be the source of the problem if mail has been
sent and received for the past couple months? I have been having the same
problem. No problems for the last two months, then all of a sudden, just
receiving and no sending.

It is impossible to say without access to the source code.

Why do want to know when all that really matters is getting
your email functionality restored?

If you insist on an answer why apparantly good software can
turn bad after a period time consider this theoretical scenario...

A program could have a counter in it which has been coded
with, for example 4 digits... everything would work OK until
the count reached 10000 whereupon the counter would be
set to zeros. The counter may function as an index to a table
and when the program tries to access item zero it gets it's
knickers in a twist with unpredictable.
The year2000 problem is the classic example of
good software going bad after a period of time.
Dates were stored with 2 digit years and thus when wrong
when the year became zero.

Like I said, it is impossible to be sure without seeing the code.

All we know is that we have seen it reported here numerous times.
Windows Mail works fine for several months, then all of a sudden
it quits working. Then, after the user uninstalls the non-compatible
antivirus, Windows Mail starts working again. How would you
explain that? Coincidence?
