I used to be able to send a link or page from a website (I have WinXP, IE6),
but since my hard drive was formatted recently, now I get this message:

No profiles have been created. To create a new profile, use the Mail icon
in the Control Panel.

I never had to do that before, and although I've looked for/at that Mail
icon, I haven't a clue what to do.

As you posted here using Outlook Express (OE), we shall assume OE is your
default Mail Client. The error suggests that you also have Outlook (OL)
installed.

1. Do http://www.oehelp.com/oedef.aspx; then do...

2a. http://www.oehelp.com/oelnk.aspx; and...

2b. Start [ | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs ] | Set Program Access and
Defaults | Email | ... (make sure OE, not OL, is selected here)

If still no joy, see:

Microsoft Outlook updates change the default mail handler to Microsoft
Outlook

Any time you install an OL update, there's a very good chance that OL will
again "hijack" your default Mail Client setting from OE. To avoid this
(assuming you never use OL or OL Calendar):

1. Remove OL from your install of Office; and...

2. Decline to install any OL updates in the future.

To be able to do #2 above, you will have to change your Automatic Updates
configuration to the Notify Only option. See...

Thank you very much! Step #1 seemed to take care of it.

In Step #2, when I followed that path and got to Program Access and
Defaults, Email was not one of the choices. (Only Computer manufacturers,
Microsoft Windows, Non-Microsoft, and Custom (with the dot in the last one).

If I do find it necessary to remove Outlook (yes, I'm using OE), would I
have to uninstall the entire MS Office, or can I remove just Outlook?
(Before the hard drive formatting, I think I had both Outlook and OE without
any problems.)

If you expanded the CUSTOM section by clicking on the downward pointing
arrows on the left, you would have seen it.

You can Remove OL from your install of Office. Just click on the
Change/Remove button in Add/Remove Programs and make the appropriate
choices.

OE and OL can co-exist: It's the OL updates that cause the issues. Yes, MS
knows about it: They don't consider it a problem or anything worth fixing,
sad to say.
