Outlook 2000, exchange server is configured and working. Now I need to
send an e-mail via a separate SMTP server. How do I tell outlook to
send an e-mail "via" a separately configured SMTP server (and not
"via" the main exchange server?)

Tks,

Outlook 2002 and 2003 *do* handle different accounts well, so another option
is to upgrade.

Outlook 2000 doesn't handle multiple accounts very well - you'll do best
using a second profile containing the account with the SMTP server.

Create a second email account with your SMTP server setting. Change your View options to view the From field on the email form. When sending email from your SMTP server, put that email account into the From field. Click send and recieve from the second email account.
